Why I Should Never Be The One Asking For Money (It’s not the reason you’d think…)

Yesterday a client emailed requesting a new feature on their website.

Today one of my project managers emailed the client, clearly-outlining the scope and pricing for us to build that new feature.

The quoted price was very fair and reflected our current hourly rate multiplied by the expected hours we’ll invest building the feature. BUT I was very uncomfortable with the amount. In fact, I would have undercharged for the work if I was in the loop. Thankfully, I was not in the loop – a designed feature I need to lean into more often. 🙂

The client quickly emailed back, “Invoice paid.”

Reflection

What was the source of my discomfort with our very fairly and accurately quoted price? I think it probably has something to do with my childhood and how I am scared to death of rejection.

In lieu of lots of therapy to figure out what causes me to underbid projects and then self-correcting that issue, I need to continue letting my project managers do the project quoting.
